"A student I once taught at Northeastern University in Boston inadvertently provided me with the metaphor of 'the grammar sleuth' one day when he confessed that language had always been a complete mystery to him.

As a corporate consultant, I soon realized that the 'mystery' surrounding language wasn't confined to the college classroom. Almost 60% of company correspondence these days contains at least one grammar or spelling error—and the writers who are responsible for these embarrassing mistakes are often woefully unprepared to identify or correct them.

The Grammar Sleuth™ programs are based on a very simple premise: We can't expect corporate writers to eliminate the mistakes in their writing as long as they're not able to SEE those mistakes! And the only way we can make sure they can SEE them is to provide customized training.

Using examples drawn (anonymously, of course) from the correspondence of each department represented in the workshop, we provide participants with solid evidence that grammar felonies and misdemeanors are indeed lurking in their own writing. We then give them a chance to sleuth those writing samples, using the easy-to-remember tips that we've offered along the way.

Although our approach is direct, it's also playful and wholly nonthreatening. In The Case of the Quarreling Couple, for instance, we discover a foolproof method for eliminating subject-verb disagreement—or we help the group deal with their confusion over plurals and possessives in The Case of the Purloined Apostrophe. Each participant is encouraged to become a 'grammar sleuth' of the written word—and we present gold badges for those who, during the workshop, achieve the status of 'Super Sleuths.'
